On Friday, President Bola Tinubu congratulated the Board, Management, and staff of the Nigerian Tribune newspaper on its 75th anniversary.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the Tribune, affectionately referred to as the “Great Survivor,” for remaining true to the vision set forth by its founding publisher.
The President praised the newspaper for its commitment to fostering constructive nationalism, social justice, democracy, and press freedom. He also highlighted the Tribune’s role in advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their economic, social, or political status.
In his remarks, Tinubu reflected on the contributions of prominent journalists who have helped shape the Tribune brand, including Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a former governor of Lagos State, along with Ayo Ojewunmi, known as Pen Atalanta, Chief Tola Adeniyi, Biodun Oduwole, Folu Olamiti, and many others, especially during challenging times when state agents attempted to suppress the newspaper.
The President acknowledged that the Nigerian Tribune has emerged as a pillar of truth and a vigilant guardian of society throughout the years, fulfilling its constitutional role in nation-building with admirable integrity.
He underscored the importance of reputable publications like the Nigerian Tribune in today’s intricate landscape, where the rise of the internet has enabled anyone to assume the role of a “citizen journalist.” “These publications offer the public information that is factual, balanced, and fosters social harmony,” he stated.
Tinubu expressed his hope that the anniversary celebrations would honour the legacy of brave journalism and chart a path for the future, where truth and credibility prevail over falsehood and sensationalism.
He wished the Nigerian Tribune continued success in delivering impactful journalism that upholds democratic values and contributes to a forward-thinking society.
