Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed his empathy for the difficulties faced by Nigerian men in supporting their families amidst the ongoing leadership challenges in the country.
With International Men’s Day being observed on Tuesday, Obi encouraged men to maintain their hope and resilience.
In a post shared on his X account, the former governor of Anambra State highlighted the adverse effects of inadequate healthcare on the quality of life for Nigerian men, emphasizing their daily struggles.
“As we observe International Men’s Day today, I want to take a moment to honor all Nigerian men for their remarkable strength during these trying times and their unwavering commitment to the progress and development of our nation,” he stated.
“As a Nigerian man myself, I have witnessed the harsh realities our men endure while striving to provide for their families, battling numerous challenges in a country that often seems devoid of hope due to leadership failures.”
Obi pointed out the severe hunger crisis and instability that plague the nation, adding that the average Nigerian man carries the heavy responsibility of ensuring his family’s safety and well-being.
He lamented the poor healthcare system, which significantly impacts their overall quality of life, citing statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics that reveal the average life expectancy for Nigerian men is just 55.1 years, compared to the global average of 70 years. This stark difference underscores the high levels of stress that men face in their daily fight for survival.
“On this meaningful day, I extend a message of hope to all Nigerian men. I urge you to endure and persevere. Do not despair; stay strong. We are all in this together, and together, we will create the New Nigeria that we desire and deserve. A New Nigeria is indeed possible,” Obi concluded.
