Mikel Arteta has disclosed the discussions he had with Arsenal’s ownership during the recent international break.
The Arsenal manager traveled to the United States while the Premier League was on hiatus for two weeks, engaging in significant conversations with the Kroenke family.
After a period of increased spending over the last two years, Arsenal adopted a more cautious approach during the summer transfer window, which has left some critical positions under-resourced.
The Gunners have been rumored to be interested in players such as Alexander Isak, Victor Gyokeres, and Arda Guler as they seek to rejuvenate an attack that has struggled in the absence of Martin Odegaard.
Arteta confirmed that discussions about Arsenal’s transfer strategies took place during his visit, along with deliberations regarding a successor for outgoing sporting director, Edu.
“It’s always beneficial to spend quality time together. We discussed the transfer windows, the club’s current state, our feelings about our objectives, and the future direction, including Edu’s role,” he explained.
“There were numerous topics on the table, but it’s always rewarding to be with them because there’s much to learn. They bring a wealth of experience in sports, and you can feel their ambition, especially when you’re in their presence.”
Despite the physical distance, Arteta noted how closely the owners remain engaged with the club’s aspirations and daily operations.
In the wake of Edu’s departure, Arsenal has been linked with potential candidates like Roberto Olabe and former player Tomas Rosicky, but they might also consider promoting from within, with Jason Ayto as a strong contender.
“Jason and the entire team are doing exceptional work,” Arteta remarked. “While Edu and I received much recognition, the real effort comes from these individuals.”
“The ambition within the team is impressive; it’s not easy to suddenly switch roles and adapt to new responsibilities, but the swift response and willingness to embrace change has been remarkable.”
“With that ambition, determination, and enthusiasm, we have something truly special,” he concluded.
