Former Senator Shehu Sani has called upon Nigerians to take the initiative to read and comprehend important issues before publicly sharing their opinions.

He pointed out that many individuals do not look deeper than a single page of content, often depending on social media for their understanding and decisions.

On his verified Facebook page, Senator Sani recounted an interaction with a man who claimed that the Tax Reform Bill currently under consideration in the National Assembly was designed to increase taxes for Nigerians, impoverish the North, and disproportionately benefit Lagos.

Sani wrote, “A man informed me that the Tax Reform Bill being discussed in the National Assembly is intended to raise taxes on Nigerians, disadvantage the North, and enrich Lagos.”

“I obtained both hard and soft copies of the Bill from the National Assembly. I invited him for breakfast and presented him with a copy of the Bill, asking him to point out where these claims were mentioned. He was unable to do so.”

“He then admitted that he had merely overheard others discussing these ideas, which influenced his own statements. This highlights the peril of consuming information solely from social media. Today, many individuals seem to avoid reading anything longer than a single page, whether it’s an article or an official document.”
