The Port Harcourt Refinery, one of Nigeria’s state-owned oil refineries, has officially started processing crude oil, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector.

The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Femi Soneye, announced the development on Tuesday.

“Today marks a monumental achievement for Nigeria as the Port Harcourt Refinery officially commences crude oil processing. This groundbreaking milestone signifies a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation,” Soneye stated.

The refinery has begun operations at 60% capacity, with truck loading set to start the same day.

Soneye commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and GCEO Mele Kyari for their dedication to the project. “Hearty congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and the exceptional leadership of GCEO Mele Kyari for their unwavering commitment to this transformative project. Together, we are reshaping Nigeria’s energy future!”

He further revealed that efforts are underway to restore operations at the Warri Refinery, signaling additional progress in Nigeria’s drive for energy self-sufficiency.
