The Lagos State Government has applauded the Supreme Court’s pivotal ruling in Suit No. SC/1/2008, involving the Attorney-General of Lagos State and others against the Attorney-General of the Federation and others.
This landmark decision nullifies the National Lottery Act, affirming the constitutional right of state governments to oversee lotteries and gaming activities within their territories.
In a statement issued by Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the government hailed the ruling as a historic triumph for the rule of law, federalism, and state constitutional rights.
The statement noted, “The Supreme Court’s decision signifies an important recognition that the regulation of lotteries and gaming is a residual matter under the jurisdiction of state governments. This judgment strengthens the foundations of genuine federalism, enabling states to effectively manage their regulatory frameworks.”
It further emphasized that this ruling reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s belief in the nation’s pursuit of true federalism, highlighting how the restructuring efforts he has advocated are manifesting in this administration. “This judgment serves as a fitting acknowledgment of his visionary and progressive leadership,” the statement added.
The government also recognized the contributions of Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, who pursued the legal route to address contentious constitutional matters. “His determination to carry this lawsuit forward has ushered in a new era for our country,” it stated.
Additionally, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was commended for his unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and advocating for the rights of Lagos residents, which was crucial in achieving this outcome.
The statement concluded by reinforcing that the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) will serve as the exclusive regulatory body for lotteries and gaming in the state. It is committed to ensuring that gaming activities are conducted transparently and responsibly, adhering to international best practices.
The Lagos State Government has urged illegal and unlicensed lottery and gaming operators to seek regularization through the LSLGA or face legal action. The government is dedicated to creating an environment conducive for legitimate operators while protecting residents from the risks associated with unregulated gaming activities.
Lagos remains steadfast in its goal to foster a business-friendly climate for licensed operators, ensuring that the gaming sector contributes to the state’s economic growth and the prosperity of its citizens.
