Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed his congratulations to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) for successfully revitalizing the old Port Harcourt refinery.

Reacting to the NNPCL’s announcement on Tuesday that the refurbished refinery, with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, has resumed operations, Obi welcomed the news but underscored that Nigerians are eager to see the tangible impacts and advantages stemming from this revitalization.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, Obi stated:

“I extend my congratulations to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for delivering on the long-awaited promise of revitalizing the old Port Harcourt refinery.

“The refinery is back online with a production capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil each day. It is anticipated that around 200 trucks will be loading products from the facility daily.

“Nigerians are now looking forward to the resulting effects on fuel prices and the broader economy.

“Moreover, the revival of the Kaduna refinery is encouraging, as it is expected to enhance productivity, improve logistics, and alleviate financial pressures nationwide.

“While we recognize these accomplishments as a positive move forward, it is essential to highlight the need for transparency in the NNPC’s operations.

“Nigerians deserve clear information and accountability regarding the management of our critical oil resources, ensuring that the benefits of enhanced refining capacity are distributed to all Nigerians and that these gains are utilized for sustainable development.”
