Chief Bode George, the former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his disapproval of the disrespectful remarks made by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga regarding former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo, speaking at the Chinua Achebe leadership forum at Yale University on November 16, characterized the 2023 general election as a “travesty” and labeled Nigeria a “failed state.” He highlighted that the country’s deteriorating status stems from “widespread corruption, ineffective leadership, and immorality,” which have contributed to insecurity and underdevelopment.

The former president emphasized the need for appointing new, credible leaders for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with shorter terms to mitigate corruption and restore public confidence in the electoral body.

In response to Obasanjo’s remarks, Onanuga stated, “The ongoing economic challenges faced by the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2015 are a direct result of the poor economic decisions made by Obasanjo and his successors from the PDP.”

He further criticized Obasanjo, claiming, “It is sheer hypocrisy for someone who oversaw the worst election in Nigeria to call for the removal of INEC’s leadership.” He acknowledged that the only significant achievement during Obasanjo’s presidency was the effective management of fiscal and monetary policies, which were supported by rising crude oil prices during his tenure.

However, in a recent interview on Nigeria Info FM, George condemned Onanuga’s insults, asserting that respect for elders is a fundamental aspect of Yoruba culture. He pointed out that Obasanjo is old enough to be Onanuga’s father.

George remarked, “An elder, who could easily be Bayo Onanuga’s father, made a statement, and you responded with such vitriol. This reflects his character. He has insulted me before, and I remember he never dared to face me at Ijebu Ode Grammar School.”

He stressed, “The disparity in stature is apparent; people express their opinions, and he resorts to insults. The Yoruba culture does not permit such disrespect towards elders. He will eventually face the consequences for his words; respect is paramount.”

George concluded by warning Onanuga to be cautious in his actions, implying that his disrespectful behavior may have repercussions in the future.
