Super Eagles stand-in Captain William Troost-Ekong and in-form man Ademola Lookman have been nominated in different categories for the FIFA Best Player award.

Nigeria’s rock in the heart of the Super Eagles’ defence, Ekong, made the list for male best defender, while Ademola Lookman made the list for best forward of the year.

Lookman, an Atalanta man, was impressive in his side’s UEFA Europa League journey. He took it upon himself to deliver the converted trophy after singlehandedly destroying an unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side with a glorious hat-trick.

The 26-year-old former Leicester City and Everton man was instrumental in Nigeria’s journey to winning Silver at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), making the team of the tournament.

Ekong was named AFCON’s best player after his defensive masterclass helped Nigeria win silver and scored two important goals including one in the shootouts against South Africa in the semi-finals.

Ekong was a dependable leader for his Greek side POAK before his move to Saudi Arabia.

Both players are in contention for African Best but Lookman looks likely to be crowned Africa’s POTY after finishing 14th in the just concluded Ballon d’Or ceremony.
