Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has announced that trade relations between Nigeria and China reached an impressive $22.6 billion in 2023, positioning it as one of the highest trade volumes between China and any African nation.
This information was shared by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
During a meeting at the Aso Rock Villa with a Chinese delegation led by Zhang Qingwei, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Shettima expressed pride in the significant growth of trade between the two countries, noting that it has been increasing by 33 percent annually.
He stated, “In 2023, our trade relations with China reached $22.6 billion, which is among the highest in Africa, if not the highest. This relationship continues to flourish.”
Shettima acknowledged the ongoing expansion of trade and pledged Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening ties with China. He also reflected on the robust bilateral relations that have developed over the past 53 years, since their partnership began in 1971.
“Nigeria and China have enjoyed a warm friendship for over five decades. This bond is evident through numerous high-level exchanges, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to China in September 2024, which has further deepened our cooperation,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Shettima commended China for its cultural and economic successes and advocated for enhanced South-South cooperation to strengthen the partnership between the two nations.
He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the One China policy and sought China’s support in tackling the security challenges facing Nigeria, emphasizing, “Peace cannot exist without development, and development cannot thrive without peace. We are investing in technology and require your assistance.”
In response, Qingwei affirmed China’s willingness to deepen its strategic partnership with Nigeria following President Tinubu’s recent visit.
“President Tinubu and Xi Jinping have elevated Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking the beginning of a new chapter. China is prepared to implement the vital consensus reached between our leaders and support Nigeria’s developmental goals,” he stated.
