Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 election, along with his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, have addressed the buzz surrounding their recent encounter in Adamawa State.

The meeting sparked speculation after images and a video surfaced on social media, showing Obi visiting Atiku at his residence. Many commentators suggested that the two leaders were discussing a potential collaboration for the 2027 presidential election; however, both parties have refuted this claim.

Providing insights into the gathering, Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, spoke to reporters and stated, “Let’s not jump to conclusions. The reality is that Obi was invited to serve as the keynote speaker for the 20th anniversary of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) and the 16th Founder’s Day, which is a significant occasion. Obi is indeed part of that celebration.”

He further explained that the university, founded by Atiku Abubakar, was the context for the meeting: “Atiku was essentially the host. While some may perceive this as politically motivated, we know our friends well. Politics cannot sever the bonds of friendship.”

Ibe continued, “Atiku extended an invitation to Obi for breakfast, and they subsequently attended the event together. That is the essence of what took place.”

Ibrahim Umar, Obi’s media aide, echoed this sentiment, clarifying that the meeting held no political implications. “There was nothing political about it. Obi was simply invited to give a speech at the event. Naturally, people often jump to conclusions,” Umar explained.
