Nigerian Youth For Atiku (NYFA), a support organization for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate reforms within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
During a recent bi-monthly strategic meeting held in Lagos, the group’s director of communications for Nigeria and the Diaspora, Mr. Dare Dada, emphasized the need for these reforms. He stated that INEC, along with the police and other security agencies, must be overhauled to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic framework, particularly in preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections, with the recent 2023 elections under Mahmood Yakubu bringing a lot of questions on the organization.
Dada pointed out that while assessing the country’s economic landscape, it is crucial for the President to ensure that implemented reforms and policies yield beneficial outcomes for the populace. He noted that some existing policies require reevaluation to effectively tackle the socio-economic challenges currently affecting citizens.
“With the prevailing economic difficulties in Nigeria, the government must prioritize reducing unemployment,” he asserted. He expressed concern regarding the high unemployment rate and the overall economic situation, highlighting the urgent need for the government to manage these pressing issues.
“The responsibilities of governance are significant, and thus, it is vital for the government to concentrate on alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians,” Dada added. He cited ongoing problems such as rising inflation, unemployment, and naira devaluation, all of which have diminished the purchasing power of Nigerians.
In his call for a thorough evaluation of policies, Dada urged the government to tackle the issue of excessive taxation imposed by various agencies on businesses. “While we await a comprehensive review of past reforms, we strongly encourage the government to retract its current tax reform proposal from the National Assembly for a proper public discussion on its viability and appropriateness,” he concluded.
