Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has strongly condemned the arrest of lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi was detained by officers from the Nigeria Police Force at the Zone 2 Command in Lagos, following a defamation complaint lodged by Tony Elumelu, Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group. Just a day prior to his arrest, Farotimi had expressed fears for his safety due to perceived threats from prominent figures in Nigerian politics.
In a detailed message on social media, Obi characterized the arrest as “a gross misuse of police authority” and “a serious violation of democratic principles and justice.” He urged individuals who feel they have been defamed to pursue legal remedies through the court system rather than resorting to police intervention.
Obi’s statement on X read: “I have just learned about the arrest of Dele Farotimi, a distinguished human rights lawyer and advocate, over a defamation allegation. This action represents a significant abuse of police power and a serious violation of the democratic values and justice in Nigeria.”
He further stated, “This action is wholly condemned. It signifies an effort to intimidate dissenting voices that challenge authority and sends a troubling message to all Nigerians who cherish freedom of expression and demand accountability.”
Obi reminded the public that the Nigeria Police Force is meant to safeguard citizens’ rights, not suppress them. He asserted that defamation should be treated as a civil issue, resolved through the appropriate legal processes in accordance with democratic norms.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Obi noted, “As a private citizen and former governor, I have often faced defamation, insults, and falsehoods. Yet, I have never resorted to using the police to silence my critics.”
He emphasized that those who feel wronged should seek justice through legal avenues instead of exploiting police power. “The police involvement in this matter suggests an abuse of authority and raises serious questions about their independence and professionalism as a civil institution,” he added.
Obi concluded by demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Dele Farotimi, reminding the police that their primary allegiance lies with the Constitution and the citizens of Nigeria, rather than serving the interests of those in power.
