The leading Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced the commencement of a series of consultative meetings with significant stakeholders nationwide to bolster its campaign for the establishment of Anioma State.

According to the organization, this initiative is rooted in historical importance, economic potential, and the aspiration to unify the Igbo Nation.

In a statement released by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the group emphasized its dedication to the creation of Anioma State as a means to rectify historical injustices and enhance Igbo representation within Nigeria’s political landscape.

“The initiative for Anioma State pays tribute to the sacrifices made by the Anioma people, especially their dedication during the Nigeria-Biafra War, and seeks to foster unity within the Igbo community,” the statement highlighted.

Ohanaeze expressed its frustration towards attempts by political elites to derail this movement but reiterated that the collective interests of the Igbo Nation supersede individual ambitions.

This push for Anioma State follows a review of previous recommendations made by a seven-member ad-hoc committee on State Creation, chaired by Professor Chibuikeya Achokawa.

The committee’s thorough analysis brought to light past challenges, including missed opportunities regarding the establishment of Aba State during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Ohanaeze pointed out that political missteps and internal rifts, particularly under former President General Nnia Nwodo, impeded progress toward Aba State.

The organization has begun engaging with key figures, including allies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Southwest, to form a coalition advocating for the creation of Anioma State, as well as an additional state for each geopolitical zone.

“These discussions commenced on November 7, 2024, and will progress through various engagements with the Presidency, the National Assembly, and regional leaders, concluding by December 31, 2024,” the group stated.

Ohanaeze also issued a firm warning to political elites attempting to undermine this initiative, declaring the creation of Anioma State as “essential and irreversible.”

The organization urged all stakeholders to focus on the collective goals of the Igbo people and to refrain from actions that could foster division.
