The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its fight against illegal fuel trade through Operation Whirlwind Zone C, leading to the seizure of 6,200 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the past month alone.

Launched in May 2024 by Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) BA Adeniyi, MFR, PSC(+), the operation is a joint effort with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). It was designed to address persistent issues of fuel smuggling across the country.

On Wednesday, National Coordinator Compt. HC Ejibunu highlighted the operation’s achievements, stating that it has significantly reduced illegal smuggling of PMS.

“This initiative has ensured a stable local fuel supply while addressing economic sabotage linked to fuel smuggling,” Ejibunu remarked.

Since its inception, the operation has confiscated a total of 466,000 liters of PMS, with an estimated value of ₦380 million. Despite challenges such as flooding and difficult terrain, the team has maintained its effectiveness, particularly in the South-South region.

The NCS emphasized that these efforts have been critical in stabilizing fuel prices and ensuring petroleum products reach their designated destinations.

Comptroller General Adeniyi, reflecting on the operation’s success, credited the agency’s strategic approach built on the pillars of Consolidation, Collaboration, and Innovation. He expressed gratitude to partner agencies and stakeholders, emphasizing that teamwork remains the cornerstone of the mission’s success.

Operation Whirlwind Zone C continues to make strides in safeguarding the nation’s fuel supply chain and curbing economic sabotage.
