Governor Abba Yusuf has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement strategies that ensure the viability of opposition parties in Nigeria. This appeal came during a visit by INEC members to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) office in Abuja for regular party verification on Thursday.

Mr. Yusuf emphasized the necessity of a robust opposition for the health of democracy, stating, “Opposition parties in our nation are currently facing immense challenges. The crises surrounding them are not organic; they are artificially created and financially supported. INEC must devise methods to curb any undue influence exerted by the ruling government on opposition parties.”

He articulated the critical role of a dynamic opposition in fostering democratic ideals, saying, “A strong opposition is the lifeblood of democracy. Without it, we risk a weak and ineffective system that could ultimately lead to democratic failure.”

Despite these challenges, Mr. Yusuf expressed optimism about the NNPP’s future electoral success, including aspirations for control of the central government.

In his comments, NNPP’s national chairman, Ahmed Ajuji, affirmed the party’s commitment to maintaining its influence in Kano while also serving as a credible opposition force nationwide. He noted that the annual verification process would dispel false claims made by a faction of expelled former members alleging they had taken over the party’s management.

“The assertion that they have assumed control of the party is unfounded. The presence of INEC today to fulfill its regulatory responsibilities confirms that we are, and will continue to be, the NNPP,” he stated.

Ajuji cautioned party members against engaging in anti-party behavior. “While we operate as a democratic entity, we will not allow any member to act against the party’s interests without consequence. Regardless of their status, all members must adhere to our constitution and maintain discipline. We will protect our internal processes diligently,” he added.

Additionally, the party’s national publicity secretary, Ladipo Johnson, reiterated that leadership matters within the party are strictly governed by constitutional guidelines and the relevant laws and regulations.
