Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged N75 million to the State Council of the Nigerian Legion as part of his administration’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the welfare of Legionnaires and the families of deceased heroes.
This announcement was made during the Appeal Fund and Launching of the Year 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem held at the Lagos House, Marina, on Monday.
The event was attended by notable figures including Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Secretary to the Lagos State Government Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, members of the State Executive Council, Service Commanders, the Commissioner of Police, and officials from the Nigerian Legion. During the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu also unveiled the emblem and the Appeal Fund in preparation for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which will be commemorated on January 15, 2025.
In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his government’s dedication to the ongoing welfare of Legionnaires, particularly the elderly and the families of those who have fallen in service to the nation. He expressed gratitude towards the members of the Nigerian Legion and the sacrifices made by fallen heroes, assuring them that they would be included in various government initiatives.
Responding to an appeal made by the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, DCG Akeem Olawale Wolimoh, the Governor pledged to allocate several housing units from the Prince Abiodun Ogunleye Housing Estate in Ikorodu to provide shelter for vulnerable and elderly Legionnaires.
Furthermore, he committed to supplying security vehicles and equipment to the Nigerian Legion, acknowledging their readiness to continue contributing to the safety and security of lives and property in Lagos State.
Earlier in the event, DCG Wolimoh commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his ongoing support and concern for retired officers and the families of fallen heroes in Lagos State. He noted that the N50 million contributed to the State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion last year was effectively utilized for the welfare of its members and the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
