Abia State Governor Alex Otti has boldly proclaimed that his only “godfather” is the Almighty God, reinforcing his commitment to independent governance. He made this statement during a Thanksgiving service at St. James Methodist Church in Umuda, Isingwu, Umuahia North Council, an event organized by Hon. Smart Ihuoma, the local Mayor.
As the sole Labour Party governor, Otti emphasized his dedication to an open-door policy while recognizing the intricate dynamics of political sponsorship and the pressures that come from benefactors towards those in power.
He assured attendees that his administration operates autonomously, free from external influences. “One of the challenges in politics is that when individuals gain office through the support or funding of others, they often become susceptible to that person’s demands,” he explained.
“However, I can confidently state that we are standing firm. Our only godfather is the God in heaven. We have an open-door policy and are open to suggestions, but these will not be treated as commands,” Otti asserted.
He expressed his belief that the achievements of his administration would raise the standard for future elections in Abia State, making it difficult for candidates without substantial platforms to compete. Drawing a comparison to the transformative period under Dr. Chris Ngige’s leadership in 1999, Otti noted that this era established a precedent that subsequent governors have been expected to follow.
“Since then, the people of Anambra have remained vigilant in safeguarding their democracy to avoid a return to less favorable circumstances,” Otti remarked.
He also conveyed his satisfaction with the increasing levels of public participation and reiterated his commitment to transparency through consistent media engagements.
