The presidency has taken aim at Peter Obi, alleging that he is politicizing the recent tragic stampedes that occurred during food distribution efforts in various regions of the country.

Last week, over 70 individuals lost their lives in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while seeking food assistance. In response, the former governor of Anambra State attributed these incidents to widespread hunger and systemic failures plaguing the nation, expressing his sorrow that Nigerians are suffering from starvation despite the country’s rich resources and fertile land.

However, Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to the President, characterized Obi’s comments as inappropriate and irresponsible in a statement shared on his X handle on Monday.

The statement asserted, “In the search for individuals who gain from the misfortunes of others — a concept the Yoruba refer to as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — one need look no further than Peter Obi.”

Dare continued, “His recent remarks concerning the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo States demonstrate a lack of statesmanship and decency, as he desperately clings to the remnants of his once-celebrated political success. This attempt to gain cheap political leverage is misguided.”

He emphasized that during tragic situations, leaders should communicate with responsibility and offer support. President Bola Tinubu reportedly canceled all engagements, conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of life, and ordered an immediate investigation into the incidents. “This exemplifies true leadership. These events have brought to light critical issues that must be urgently addressed,” he concluded.
