The management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has refuted claims circulating in sections of the Nigerian media about introducing a resit examination for candidates needing make-up papers in the Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) between January and February.

WAEC Nigeria clarified that the report did not originate from Nigeria and is not intended for Nigerian candidates. Instead, the claim pertains to Ghana and is specific to Ghanaian candidates. According to the viral report, the WAEC Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, cited as the source, is a Ghanaian official working at WAEC’s Ghana office.

Nigerian Tribune can confirm that WAEC Nigeria introduced the first series of its own exam for private candidates in 2017 under the leadership of Mr. Olu Adenipekun, then Head of National Office (HNO). The format was maintained by his successor, Mr. Patrick Areghan, who retired two years ago, and the current HNO, Dr. Amos Dangut.

This series of exams increases WAEC Nigeria’s annual examination offerings to three:

  • The first series for private candidates held between February and March.
  • The May/June WASSCE for school-based candidates.
  • The November/December exam (formerly known as GCE) for private candidates.

Confirming to the Nigerian Tribune that the claim does not apply to Nigerian candidates, the Head of Public Affairs Unit of WAEC Nigeria, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, described the story as misleading. She reiterated that WAEC Nigeria’s first series of WASSCE for private candidates, conducted annually between February and March, remains unchanged and preparations for this year’s edition are already in place.
