The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a fatal accident that occurred early Wednesday morning near the Secretariat, inward Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

In an official statement shared via its X account, Mr Adebayo Taofiq of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department revealed that the accident involved a minibus, popularly known as “Korope,” and a long truck. The collision was caused by brake failure due to excessive speeding.

The crash trapped the minibus driver in the wreckage, while other passengers were rescued unscathed by LASTMA Officers. A coordinated rescue effort by LASTMA, LASAMBUS, and FRSC personnel attempted to free the driver, but tragically, he was found dead. His remains were handed over to the FRSC, with security provided by officers from the Alausa Police Division.

Commenting on the incident, LASTMA General Manager Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki underscored the importance of adhering to traffic rules, particularly speed limits and proper vehicle maintenance.

“This tragic event highlights the severe consequences of reckless driving. We urge all road users to prioritize safety and exercise caution on the roads,” he said.

LASTMA expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer roads and preventing avoidable accidents.
