Bode George, the former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his disappointment with the elders of Lagos for their failure to address pressing concerns during their recent discussion with President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement, George criticized the elders for focusing on trivial matters, such as acquiring King’s College, while neglecting urgent issues like crumbling infrastructure and escalating unemployment rates.

He characterized the meeting as a missed chance to advocate for the people of Lagos. “It is widely recognized that these elders are influential figures from Lagos Island, the leading commercial hub of Nigeria. Yet, instead of bringing attention to the deteriorating state of our roads, markets, and essential infrastructure, they chose to dwell on secondary matters,” George stated.

He specifically pointed out the dilapidated roads surrounding the Oba of Lagos’ palace, highlighting areas like Jankara Market and Idumagbo, which have remained in disrepair for over twenty years.

George further emphasized the extensive challenges faced by the youth in Lagos, particularly high unemployment and poverty rates, urging the government to take decisive action to create jobs and implement skill development initiatives.

Additionally, former PDP leader Alao Akala criticized the President’s economic strategies, particularly the surging fuel prices, advocating for a reduction in fuel costs and calling on the government to ensure that the advantages of locally refined fuel benefit the populace.

“The elders’ visit was a prime opportunity to convey the harsh realities of Lagos and the nation as a whole to the President. Regrettably, no substantial discussions took place, leaving the residents of Lagos disheartened,” George argued.

He urged both the government and Lagos leaders to prioritize significant reforms aimed at enhancing the state’s infrastructure and improving the overall quality of life for its citizens.
