In a critical evaluation of the previous administration, Shehu Gabam, who is the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has laid blame on Muhammadu Buhari’s government for failing to address Nigeria’s challenges adequately. Gabam accuses the former government of leaving behind a comatose economy for President Bola Tinubu to inherit.

“I have said several times that Buhari’s government is the worst that Nigeria has ever had. It is the consequence that President Bola Tinubu is suffering from because he knew he inherited an economy that has collapsed,” he said.

Despite the fact that Buhari, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), handed over to his party colleague Tinubu approximately a year ago, Gabam claims that the state of the economy Tinubu inherited was dire. The removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira resulted in an unprecedented increase in the cost of living.

However, the SDP chieftain is critical of the speed at which President Tinubu’s reforms were implemented, asserting that they were rushed. Despite these reforms, inflation has soared to historic highs, with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reporting a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 33.69% in April 2024.

Gabam has accused the economic handlers of not taking the appropriate measures to address the country’s challenges. However, he offers some advice to the President Tinubu-led administration on how to improve the situation.

1. Economic Diversification: Gabam emphasizes the need for diversification of the Nigerian economy beyond oil. He suggests focusing on sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and technology to stimulate growth and reduce dependence on oil revenue.

2. Enhancing Infrastructure: The SDP Chairman highlights the importance of investing in critical infrastructure such as roads, railways, and power supply. He believes that improving infrastructure will attract foreign investment, create jobs, and boost economic development.

3. Social Welfare Programs: Gabam recommends implementing robust social welfare programs to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians. This includes initiatives to address poverty, improve healthcare, and provide quality education for all.

4. Strengthening Anti-Corruption Efforts: The SDP Chairman emphasizes the need for a relentless fight against corruption. He suggests strengthening anti-corruption agencies, ensuring transparency and accountability in public institutions, and prosecuting corrupt individuals without bias.

5. Collaboration and Engagement: Gabam calls for inclusive governance, urging President Tinubu to engage with various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the private sector. He believes that collaboration and dialogue are essential for effective policymaking and implementation.

As President Tinubu’s administration passes through the challenges inherited from the previous government, the advice offered by Shehu Gabam serves as a reminder of the areas that require attention and quick action.
