A detained Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Abba Kyari, who was accused and is facing drug trafficking charge, was said to have been ordered to be released from prison for just two weeks. In a report by Vanguard, it was gathered that the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja granted the grace of his release for two weeks to travel to his hometown to bury his mother.

The court, in a ruling which was said to have been delivered by trial Justice Emeka Nwite, directed the release of the popular policeman from Kuje prison where he was earlier remanded.
This, according to the Judge, was to enable him participate in his mother’ s final burial rites.
The court said that it specifically granted freedom for Abba Kyari for a period which must not exceed two weeks. This order was said to have been given on Tuesday, 21st of May, 2024.
On 16th of May, 2024, the Justice had barred newsmen from covering news pertaining to the trial of the former supercop who is on trial for allegedly tampering with cocaine that was initially seized from two convicted drug peddlers- Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne.
It was said that the Justice does restrain newsmen from entering the court room whenever Abba Kyari’ s case is called up for hearinc before the court.
It was also said that the restraining of the journalists was following an application that was brought before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The agency had persuaded the court to walk out all lawyers and journalists who are not connected to the case out of the court room.
