Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has given the green light for a new minimum wage of N70,000 for the state’s workforce.
This new wage structure is set to take effect in October 2024.
The announcement was made by Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, during a press conference that followed the State Executive Council meeting overseen by Governor Otti on Monday.
Kanu emphasized the state government’s dedication to improving the welfare of its workers, stating that the disbursement of the new minimum wage will begin shortly.
“The state government is fully committed to upholding the minimum wage, and we will initiate payments of the new rate within the coming days,” Kanu remarked.
He also mentioned, “Should the governor decide to exceed the national standard and offer a higher wage, we support that decision.”
The new wage was further confirmed by Sunny Onwuma, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity.
