The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Abia State chapter has strongly condemned Governor Alex Otti’s recent directive to reverse all command promotions made in the Abia State public service over the past eight years.

The party labelled this directive as punitive, obnoxious, and anti-people, highlighting its detrimental impact on the state’s civil and public service.

In a statement issued by the state Head of Service, Dr. Mrs Ngozi Queen Obioma, dated July 4, 2024, and titled “Reversion of All Command Promotions in the Abia Public Service,” the government attempts to explain its position.

However, the PDP argued that this directive is another example of Governor Alex Otti’s disregard for due process and the provisions of the Abia Civil Service rules.

The PDP pointed out that Governor Alex Otti has previously taken actions against the civil service without following proper procedures. Shortly after assuming office, he summarily suspended all permanent secretaries in the civil service and later dismissed them without adhering to the established rules.

Furthermore, he terminated the employment of civil servants who had served as directors for many years, even when they were not due for retirement. Thousands of Abia civil servants were also sacked without due process, leaving many unpaid for over 13 months.

The issue of salary payment has become a significant concern for Abia workers, despite increased state earnings. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch of the Abia State University and the organized labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), are now on the verge of confrontation with Governor Alex Otti due to unpaid salaries and his refusal to implement the N35,000 wage award approved by the Federal government.

The PDP accused Governor Alex Otti of selectively implementing policies, favouring those from the federal government while neglecting the welfare of Abia workers.

This approach not only undermines productivity but also reflects a deep-seated animosity towards the PDP and the previous government.

The reversal of command promotions made by the previous government, despite following civil service rules, is seen as a regrettable act aimed at undermining the progress and stability of Abia’s governance structures.

This decision demonstrates Governor Alex Otti’s unwavering hostility towards the PDP and the previous administration.

The Abia PDP has said they firmly stand against such actions that deteriorate the sanctity of the public service and negatively impact the welfare of the people.
