The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to commission three new bus and taxi terminals in Abuja next year.

Wike made this pledge on Monday during the official flag-off ceremony for the construction of the Central Business District (CBD) bus and taxi terminal.

Speaking at the event, the minister emphasized that the FCT Administration (FCTA) only undertakes projects when funds are fully secured. “The money for this project is already in place,” Wike confirmed.

He highlighted that this terminal is one of three currently under construction, with others located in Mabushi and Kugbo. “This one is for the Central Business District, the heart of the city. Many of us who have traveled abroad often wonder why we don’t have similar facilities here. Well, that’s about to change,” he stated.

Wike praised Abuja’s beauty and stressed the importance of linking expanded road infrastructure with functional bus terminals to enhance the city’s transport system. He noted that the new terminals would help combat the notorious “one-chance” crimes by ensuring that all vehicles operating from these terminals are registered and monitored.

“For security reasons, you’ll be able to identify which vehicle you’re boarding and where it’s headed. Unlike standing on the roadside, unsure of who’s driving, these terminals will ensure that the vehicles and drivers are known and accountable,” Wike explained.

The minister also emphasized the comfort and modern amenities that the new terminals will offer, similar to those found in international transport hubs. “You’ll be able to relax, enjoy a meal, or even watch a movie while waiting for your bus or taxi. This is the standard for a city like Abuja,” he added.

Wike assured the public that the construction timeline is on track, with a formal commissioning expected next year. “This is not a project with uncertain funding. We’ve made it clear to the contractor that there will be no need for budget augmentations, as the funds are already secured. The FCT only awards contracts when funding is guaranteed,” he reiterated.

Earlier, Biodun Otuola, the head of Planet Project, the company handling the construction, promised to complete the project ahead of schedule, provided the funds continue to be made available.
