The founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has denied allegations of judicial corruption made by activist lawyer Dele Farotimi, describing them as an attempt to tarnish his hard-earned reputation.

Speaking through his legal team at a press conference in Ekiti State, Babalola revealed that he petitioned the police to investigate and prosecute Farotimi for defamatory claims in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.

The senior advocate emphasized that the ongoing legal proceedings aim to establish the truth and uphold justice.

Legal Actions Against Farotimi

Farotimi was arrested in Lagos on December 3 and arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Ado Ekiti on December 4. The court remanded him in custody, with the next hearing scheduled for December 10, 2024.

Babalola’s lawyers, led by Owoseni Ajayi, a former Ekiti State Attorney General, clarified that the press conference aimed to address misleading narratives about the case. Ajayi stated:

“The law allows free speech but not one calculated to injure the good reputation of another. If Mr. Farotimi can prove his claims, he will be free. Otherwise, justice must take its course.”

New Cybercrime Allegations

In addition to the defamation charges, Farotimi now faces cybercrime allegations for statements made during an online interview on Mic On Podcast, hosted by journalist Seun Okinbaloye.

According to the police, Farotimi accused Babalola of “corrupting the judiciary,” a claim deemed false and injurious to public order under Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act of 2015.

The police have filed these new charges at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti, expanding the scope of the legal battle.

Babalola’s Stance on Justice

Babalola’s lead counsel defended his client’s decision to pursue legal redress, questioning whether justice should be denied to a prominent figure simply because of his stature.

“Aare Afe Babalola has built his reputation over decades. It is only fair that anyone making allegations must substantiate them with proof,” Ajayi remarked.

Public Reactions

The case has sparked debates over free speech, defamation, and accountability, with supporters of both parties expressing strong views. Protests and counter-protests are reportedly being planned in response to the unfolding legal drama.

The outcome of the December 10 hearing and the federal charges will determine the next phase in this high-profile legal conflict.
