The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, who passed on in the early hours of Thursday, has been buried in Ikoyi Cemetery in Lagos.
Mr Ayilara, a Muslim, died on Thursday morning at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LUTH after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer, yesterday.
He was hale and hearty over the week when he attended the wedding ceremony of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun’s daughter on Saturday and the pulling out ceremony for retired AIG Yetunde Longe at the Police College in Ikeja on Tuesday.
The departed Police chief held a Bachelor of Law, LL.B (Hons) from the University of Ibadan, a Barrister at Law, BL from the Nigeria Law School, Lagos and a Master of Law (LLM) from the University of Lagos.
He was appointed into the Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on the 18th of May, 1992 and had served as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Police Mobile Force Office, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, Oyo State Command, Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal and Investigations Department, Panti, Lagos and Acting Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command.
Mr. Ayilara died six months after assuming duties in Akwa Ibom State Command.
Meanwhile, Governor Umo Eno has described the late Mr Ayilara as “one of the finest operational officers, a fine gentleman and a reputable crime-buster who epitomised the ideals of Nigerian Police.
Governor Umo Eno in a condolence message to the bereaved family said Mr. Ayilara will be greatly missed as “a critical member of our state Security Architecture who alongside other sister security agencies, worked hard to position our state as one of the safest, secure and serene places to live, work and invest.”
