Social commentator Aisha Yesufu has urged the Department of State Services (DSS) to redirect its efforts toward gathering intelligence on kidnappers, terrorists, and unidentified assailants.
This call to action came in response to the DSS’s recent announcement claiming it had identified the financiers behind an upcoming nationwide protest aimed at addressing economic struggles and poor governance.
In a statement released on Thursday by spokesperson Peter Afunanya, the DSS characterized the protest’s motives as politically driven and cautioned the organizers against moving forward with their plans. The agency also warned of a potential plot by criminal groups to exploit the protests and incite chaos across the nation.
In a post on her social media account on Friday, Yesufu criticized the DSS for its inability to effectively monitor and gather information on the activities of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and rogue gunmen, which she believes has exacerbated the hunger crisis in the country.
She stated, “The DSS must reflect on its shortcomings in tracking the terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers who have terrorized our nation, forcing farmers off their lands and significantly contributing to the widespread hunger we are experiencing.”
Reports indicate that a segment of the Nigerian populace is organizing for a nationwide protest scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024.
