The Akwa Ibom Police Command has apprehended a suspect, whose name has been withheld, for allegedly possessing firearms and substances believed to be cannabis sativa.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, shared this information with journalists in Uyo on Tuesday. According to John, the arrest was made during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by police officers in the Ibiono Ibom area of the state.

“During a routine operation, officers from the Akwa Ibom Police Command detained a suspect, a native of Ikot Obong village, who was found in possession of firearms and substances suspected to be cannabis sativa while riding a commercial motorcycle,” John stated.

She detailed that an English Baretta Pistol with a defaced breech number was discovered on the suspect during the search, along with a significant quantity of suspected cannabis sativa hidden in his rain boot.

The recovered items were seized, and the suspect was taken into custody. During interrogation, the suspect claimed that the firearm belonged to a friend. The police are continuing their investigation to apprehend other members of the gang involved.

ASP John added that the suspect would face charges in court once the investigation is concluded.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Waheed Ayilara, reaffirmed the command’s strong commitment to maintaining safety and security in Akwa Ibom. He also encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station.
