Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has hailed the recent landmark decision by the Supreme Court, granting financial autonomy to local governments.
Speaking to Government House correspondents upon his return from an official engagement, Governor Eno expressed the significance of the ruling for local governance in Nigeria.
However, he also voiced concerns regarding the practical implementation of this newfound autonomy.
Describing the Supreme Court verdict as a pivotal moment, Governor Eno recognized the relief it brings to state governments, allowing local authorities to independently manage their financial affairs.
He emphasized the positive impact this autonomy would have, considering the substantial support provided by the state to local governments.
Governor Eno, while lauding the ruling, raised important concerns about the challenges that may arise during its implementation.
He highlighted the need for local governments to effectively handle their financial responsibilities, especially in terms of timely payment of salaries and clearing arrears owed to teachers, health workers, and other employees of the local government.
“We must address the concern of timely payments to local government workers, ensuring that we do not burden future administrations with accumulated arrears,” Governor Eno expressed. “While we have already prioritized the unhindered allocation of funds to local governments since assuming office, we now need to focus on their capability under this new autonomy.”
Governor Eno expressed confidence in finding viable solutions to the challenges posed by the autonomy ruling. He called for collaborative efforts to ensure a smooth and successful implementation of the Supreme Court decision throughout Akwa Ibom State, emphasizing the importance of upholding the integrity of the ruling while promoting the growth and prosperity of local governments.
