Amnesty International (AI), a global human rights organization, has urged President Bola Tinubu to cease actions that infringe upon the rights of Nigerians to express dissenting opinions.
This call to action comes in the wake of the Department of State Services (DSS) storming the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Monday.
Reports from indicated that operatives of Nigeria’s secret police took control of SERAP’s office, demanding the presence of the organization’s directors.
This incident followed the arrest of Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by DSS officials earlier that same day in Abuja.
In a statement shared on its X account on Monday, Amnesty International condemned the unlawful intrusion at SERAP’s Abuja office, asserting that it reflects President Tinubu’s excessive measures to suppress dissent.
“Amnesty International has received alarming reports regarding the unauthorized occupation of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by DSS operatives. President Bola Tinubu is overstepping bounds with his government’s oppressive tactics aimed at silencing dissenting voices,” the statement declared.
