The Anambra State Police Command has successfully rescued Alozie John, a 27-year-old livestock dealer from Isielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who attempted suicide in Umunnachi community, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
The young man reportedly faced severe financial distress due to an indebtedness of ₦1.2 million to his livestock supplier. According to the police, the intervention came after his WhatsApp conversation was intercepted.
In a statement on Saturday, the Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, detailed the rescue operation: “On 23/8/2024, Anambra police rescued a young man who attempted to take his own life. He was debriefed, rendered medical assistance, and kept in safe custody for monitoring.”

Ikenga explained further: “The young man, who was later identified as Alozie John, aged 27 years from Isielu LGA Ebonyi State but currently residing in Umunnachi, Dunukofia LGA, had sent a WhatsApp message to the Command indicating that he had ingested a poisonous substance in a desperate attempt to end his life due to his debt of ₦1.2 million.”
“He further confessed that he deals in selling live chicken, and after consuming the harmful chemical, he did not experience any immediate adverse effects,” Ikenga added.
The police have contacted Alozie John’s mother, who is now assisting with his evaluation and transfer to a more appropriate facility for further care.
