Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised the newly elected governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, to refrain from engaging in disputes with his predecessor, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
During a courtesy visit from Okpebholo, Ganduje emphasized the importance of focusing on effective governance rather than dwelling on past administrations. He urged the new governor to concentrate on implementing his manifesto, fostering relationships with stakeholders, and building a collaborative political environment.
Ganduje stated, “The principles of democracy have been upheld, the elections were conducted successfully, and we emerged victorious. It’s essential to turn your attention away from the previous administration. Look ahead, not behind, and avoid wasting valuable time in conflict with your predecessor. There is no need for that.”
He continued, “A progressive government should prioritize the agenda outlined in your manifesto, which you carefully crafted. Stay committed to it, promote socio-economic development for the people, and cultivate strong connections with stakeholders.”
Encouraging Okpebholo to embody an action-oriented leadership style, Ganduje remarked, “During your campaign, you were known as an action candidate; now it’s time to be an action governor. We have faith in your ability to lead and make our state proud.”
The former governor of Kano also assured Okpebholo of the party’s support, stressing the importance of maintaining functional party offices at all levels—from wards to the state. “We have recently launched a progressive institute, the intellectual arm of our party, dedicated to training personnel, particularly at the local government level. This initiative aims to address the needs of the Nigerian populace and shape a political agenda for your administration.”
“This institution is not merely a seasonal entity; it’s a dynamic political force that will engage throughout the year, developing programs and initiatives that keep our party vibrant,” he added.
In response, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for securing victory in Edo State, acknowledging the challenges of the election process. “It wasn’t an easy journey. I appreciate how often the Chairman checked in on my readiness for the election. He made his presence felt in Edo five days before the polls, and his impact was significant.”
He went on to thank President Tinubu, stating, “I want to extend my appreciation to Mr. President for ensuring our success in Edo. The atmosphere was peaceful during the elections, despite prior fears of violence. This victory signifies a new beginning for the people of Edo State.
“A new dawn has arrived, and I want to commend the working committee for their outstanding efforts. May God bless you all with long life and prosperity.”
