There are increasing signs that the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Abdullahi Ganduje, might delay the inaugural session of the National Executive Committee (NEC) until 2025.
According to sources within the APC Secretariat, the likely postponement is linked to President Bola Tinubu’s busy schedule and his ongoing absence from Nigeria.
An insider shared, “Currently, Mr. President has not returned to the country. This was also the reason we had to cancel the previously scheduled September dates for the NEC meeting.
Given the circumstances, it seems unlikely that we will hold an NEC meeting this year. With only two months left in the year, it’s impractical to schedule it during the festive season in December. Perhaps it will be pushed to 2025, but 2024 is definitely off the table.”
These developments come just two months after the APC announced the indefinite postponement of its National Caucus and NEC meetings, which were originally planned for September 11 and 12.
While no official explanation was given for the suspension of these meetings, National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka indicated that a new date would be communicated in the future.
However, sources have suggested that both meetings were called off primarily due to President Tinubu’s unavailability.
When approached for comments, Nze Chidi Duru, the National Deputy Organising Secretary of the APC, confirmed that there is currently no set date for the NEC meeting. He stated, “We are not aware of any new date. The postponement remains in effect.”
Abdulkareem Kana, the National Legal Adviser of the APC, supported this view, noting, “We cannot determine when the next NEC meeting will take place. As far as I know, a new date has not been established. For us in the APC, we cannot proceed until we receive a new date from the President, who is expected to return shortly from his travels.”
