The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asserted that it will not passively observe as President Bola Tinubu’s administration faces potential threats ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During a press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, state chairpersons of the APC from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) expressed their concerns regarding an upcoming protest scheduled for August, which they believe is aimed at destabilizing the current government.
Alphonsus Ogar Eba, the chairman of the Cross River State chapter and Secretary of the APC States Chairmen Forum, emphasized the party’s commitment to mobilizing supporters nationwide for solidarity demonstrations in support of President Tinubu.
Eba urged Nigerians from all political affiliations to join the APC in backing the administration, stating, “As the ruling party, we are ready to face any challengers in 2027, but we refuse to allow undemocratic forces to undermine the government we fought hard to bring to power. Such actions would betray the trust of the Nigerian citizens who bestowed this mandate upon us.”
He called on all patriotic individuals to stand against any attempts to intimidate them into participating in disorganized protests that could threaten the nation’s peace.
Eba encouraged citizens to collaborate with security forces to identify and report any individuals or groups intending to incite violence.
In his announcement, Eba detailed a plan for nationwide solidarity rallies from July 29 to August 11, 2024, aimed at promoting President Tinubu’s achievements and reinforcing the defense of democracy against any disruptive elements.
He urged all party members and concerned citizens from other political parties to unite in safeguarding democratic principles.
While acknowledging the right to protest as guaranteed by the constitution, Eba stressed the importance of ensuring such actions are conducted lawfully. He pointed out that security intelligence has indicated that certain individuals may attempt to exploit the protest for their own agendas.
“This is unacceptable, and we must respond with civility by informing and educating the peace-loving citizens of our nation about the schemes of failed politicians who seek power through illegitimate means by inciting the public to engage in violent protests,” he stated.
Eba cautioned that while protests are a constitutional right, the current security landscape suggests that proceeding with such demonstrations could exacerbate the nation’s socio-economic challenges, as seen in past events like the 2020 Endsars protests and recent turmoil in Kenya. The APC hopes to rally citizens to prioritize peace and stability during these uncertain times.
