The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission announced on Saturday the results of the 2024 Local Government Elections held on October 19, declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the partial winners.
Hajiya Mohammed, the Commission’s Chairman, praised the citizens of Kaduna State, particularly the voters who participated in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights.
During the announcement, she noted that eight political parties contested in the elections, with the APC securing 23 chairmanship positions and 255 councillorship positions.
“By the authority vested in the Commission, I confirm the results collected and reported by the returning officers. The APC has won 23 local government chairmanship positions and 255 ward councillorship positions statewide,” she stated.
The APC emerged victorious in several local governments, including Birnin-Gwari, Chikun, Igabi, Ikara, Jaba, Jema’a, Kachia, Kaduna North, and Kaduna South. Additional local governments won by the APC are Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon Gari, Sanga, Soba, Zango-Kataf, and Zaria.
The breakdown of the councillorship positions revealed that the APC swept all 255 seats as declared by the electoral officials. The distribution of these positions is as follows:
- Birnin-Gwari: 11 wards
- Chikun: 12 wards
- Giwa: 11 wards
- Igabi: 12 wards
- Ikara: 10 wards
- Jaba: 10 wards
- Jema’a: 12 wards
- Kachia: 12 wards
- Kaduna North: 12 wards
- Kaduna South: 13 wards
- Kagarko: 10 wards
- Kajuru: 10 wards
- Kaura: 10 wards
- Kauru: 11 wards
- Kubau: 11 wards
- Kudan: 10 wards
- Lere: 11 wards
- Makarfi: 10 wards
- Sabon Gari: 11 wards
- Sanga: 11 wards
- Soba: 11 wards
- Zango-Kataf: 11 wards
- Zaria: 13 wards
The Chairman emphasized that the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections reflected positively on the voters and the people of Kaduna State.
“It demonstrates that democracy is thriving. We will continue to build on the successes achieved towards democratic consolidation,” she added.
Hajiya Mohammed also commended the hard work and dedication of the Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, the Directors, Electoral Officers, and their assistants, highlighting their professionalism throughout the electoral process.
Eight political parties participated in the elections, including the ADC, AAC, APGA, LP, NNPP, PDP, PRP, and YPP. The Electoral and Returning Officers submitted their reports in accordance with the law after declaring results in their respective constituencies.
Governor Uba Sani, after casting his vote at the LEA Kawo polling unit O47, expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the local government elections statewide. He noted that the elections were generally free, fair, and peaceful, with only minor issues reported in three polling units and wards.
The governor underscored the importance of local government elections, stating that the turnout across all 23 local government areas was commendable.
He acknowledged the extensive campaign efforts by the APC and urged voters to maintain peace, reminding them that every election yields both winners and losers. He expressed confidence in the credibility of the election outcomes.
