APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s largest container terminal, has set a new record for truck servicing, processing 32,945 gate volumes through 20,856 truck visits in November. This milestone includes import deliveries, empty containers, and export gate-ins.
Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen celebrated the achievement, noting, “This is a significant record for both gate volumes and truck visits since we began operations in 2006. It reflects the success of our transformation and optimization efforts.”
Since 2020, the terminal has undergone a complete overhaul, modernizing its infrastructure, operations, equipment, services, and workforce. These initiatives have boosted volume growth and expanded capacity, with the terminal continually optimizing its processes to meet market demands and improve customer satisfaction.
Recent upgrades include the introduction of expanded barge slots, a new booking app, enhanced rail services, and increased yard capacity to accommodate an additional 2,400 TEUs of export cargo. The terminal has also introduced extended gate access and dedicated export lanes, aimed at reducing turnaround times for export containers.
Knudsen acknowledged the vital role of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in achieving this milestone. He expressed gratitude, stating, “This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our partners. We thank the NPA and NCS for their collaboration in making this success possible.”
The terminal’s Lean culture, focused on continuous process optimization, has contributed to smoother operations and greater efficiency, benefiting both customers and the overall logistics ecosystem. Knudsen emphasized the terminal’s commitment to enhancing services and exceeding customer expectations, stating, “We will continue to push boundaries and set new benchmarks in Nigeria’s logistics industry.”
