The Action Peoples Party (APP) has officially distanced itself from a faction in Rivers State that claims to represent the party’s legitimate leadership.
In a statement issued from Abuja, APP National Chairman Chief Uche Nnadi denounced the group as impostors, asserting that they have never held any official position within the party. He has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest and prosecute these individuals.
Nnadi clarified that Chief Sunny Nwokekoro is recognized by the national leadership as the new State Chairman, succeeding Hon. Kenneth Atata, the previous chairman.
The APP has also expressed its backing for the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to move forward with the upcoming election.
The party stated, “Our National Working Committee fully endorses RSIEC’s decision to conduct the election in compliance with Justice I.P.C. Igwe’s ruling, which mandates the election to take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024. We secured this judgment, and we are entitled to its advantages.”
The party reiterated its appeal to the Inspector General of Police to remain neutral and avoid allowing the police force to be politicized.
“The RSIEC is acting under the authority of a ruling from a competent court, and the Police must not interfere with this directive,” they stated.
Furthermore, the APP called on the IGP and other security agencies to ensure adequate security and uphold peace, law, and order during and after the election, as stipulated by the court ruling. The IGP is reminded that he is also obligated to adhere to this court order.
The party also encouraged the residents of Rivers State to actively participate in the election on Saturday, emphasizing their right to vote for their preferred candidates while particularly urging support for APP candidates, who are presented as the best options to advance the state’s development.
The APP is optimistic about securing a majority of the seats in the state, especially with the Governor encouraging his supporters to join the party and contest under its banner.
