Asisat Oshoala, the Nigerian striker, has been awarded the best goal of the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2023/24 season.
Oshoala scored a remarkable bicycle kick in Barcelona’s 5-0 victory over Benfica during their opening group game on their way to securing their second consecutive Champions League title.
In the match, with Barcelona already leading 4-0, Jonatan Giráldez provided a pass to Oshoala, the reigning Women’s African Footballer of the Year, who wasted no time in leaving her mark on the game with a stylish goal. This was her only goal for the competition.
Subsequently, Oshoala made a mid-season transfer to the American club Bay FC. On Monday, UEFA announced that Oshoala’s goal had been selected as the best among other goals in the UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign according to UEFA’s Technical Observer panel. UEFA praised her stunning bicycle kick against Benfica on Matchday 1, awarding her the Goal of the Season.
Aitana BonmatÃ, a midfielder for Barcelona, secured the second spot for her bending effort in the quarter-finals second-leg win against Brann, while Delphine Cascarino of Lyon came third for her long-range strike in the quarter-finals second-leg victory over Benfica.
Oshoala made history with Barcelona Femenà by becoming the first African player to win three UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.
Although she moved to Bay FC in the United States during the mid-season, she still received a winner’s medal.
Before her transfer, the Super Falcons striker contributed to Barcelona’s Champions League campaign by playing in two group-stage matches and scoring one goal.
