The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day warning ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve lingering issues that date back to 2009.
In a statement released on Wednesday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke called on the government to finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, in line with the recommendations of the Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement of 2021.
The union also demanded the immediate release of withheld salaries from the 2022 strike action, expressing frustration over what it described as the government’s persistent delays and lack of commitment, which are creating disruptions in the public university system.
“ASUU has decided to give the Nigerian Government an additional 14 days, effective from Monday, September 23, 2024, to comprehensively address all unresolved matters,” the statement read. “Failure to do so could lead to industrial unrest, for which the union will not be held responsible,” ASUU warned.
ASUU’s demands include the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The union is also pressing for the settlement of outstanding third-party deductions, such as check-off dues and cooperative contributions.
The union further urged the government to allocate funds for the revitalization of public universities, as partially outlined in the 2023 Federal Government Budget, and ensure the payment of Earned Academic Allowances.
ASUU also highlighted concerns about the uncontrolled establishment of new universities by Federal and State Governments, the need to implement reports from university visitation panels, the reversal of the unlawful dissolution of Governing Councils, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a replacement for IPPIS.
