The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to resume its strike, which was suspended in 2020.
The union cites President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s failure to resolve ongoing disputes with the federal government as the reason.
This announcement was made in a press statement signed by the ASUU Coordinator for the Kano Zone, Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad. The statement, also shared by the Federal University Dutse (FUD) ASUU Chairman, Comrade Salim Ahmed, was made available to Tribune Online in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.
The statement reads, “For the past four years, our public universities have experienced industrial disharmony, resulting in two costly and avoidable strike actions.”
The statement further highlighted, “There were high hopes that the President Tinubu-led administration would promptly address the lingering issues that triggered these strike actions.” However, Professor Muhammad emphasized that these expectations have been unmet, leading to growing frustration among ASUU members who feel their patience has been stretched to the limit.
Despite several attempts to dialogue with government officials, including the President, to address the unresolved issues and fulfil agreements between the Union and the Federal Government, the ASUU leadership has seen no progress, prompting the decision to consider resuming the strike.
