Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticised the Federal Government in response to recent violent attacks in Yobe and other regions across Nigeria.
Atiku accused President Tinubu’s administration of neglecting critical security issues while focusing on suppressing journalistic freedom. He condemned the terrorist attack in Yobe State on Sunday, which resulted in numerous fatalities.
In a statement on his X handle, Atiku remarked, “Despite the tragic bloodshed in Yobe and the widespread destruction in villages across Katsina, Sokoto, and other areas in the North-West and North-Central regions, the government appears disengaged, preoccupied with trivial matters.”
He added, “The turmoil also extends to the South, where Boko Haram’s activities and political unrest continue to threaten national stability. Instead of addressing these severe issues, the Federal Government is focused on silencing dissent and imposing harsh penalties on protesters.”
Atiku called for urgent and comprehensive reforms in the current security framework, expressing his condolences to the victims of the attacks and urging the Tinubu administration to prioritize the protection of citizens.
The attack in Yobe State occurred in Mafa Village, near Shekau, the hometown of the deceased Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau. Insurgents targeted the village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area, resulting in multiple casualties and the burning of several homes.
Police spokesperson Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed the incident, noting that it was reported by a resident, Adamu Hassan, to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station. The exact number of casualties has not yet been determined.
