The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed his warm congratulations to John Azuta-Mbata, a former senator, following his recent election as the president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Reports confirm that Mr. Azuta-Mbata was elected as the 13th leader of the esteemed Igbo socio-cultural organization during a ceremony held in Enugu on Friday. He succeeds the outgoing president-general, Fidelis Chukwu, whose term came to an end concurrently.
Originating from the Ikwere Ethnic Nationality in Rivers State, South-south Nigeria, the new president-general brings a wealth of experience to his role. At the age of 65, he previously served as the senator for the Rivers East Constituency from 1999 to 2007, representing the PDP.
In addition to Mr. Azuta-Mbata’s election, Okey Nwadinobi from Abia State has been appointed as the national deputy president, while Emeka Sibeidu, a former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, takes on the role of secretary-general. Furthermore, fourteen other leaders have been elected to various executive positions within the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
Exemplifying leadership and integrity, Atiku, the former vice-president, released a statement on Saturday through his media aide, Paul Ibe. In his remarks, he commended the newly appointed executive members and specifically praised Mr. Azuta-Mbata’s extensive background as a lawmaker and administrator, noting that their collective expertise positions them well to fulfill their responsibilities.
Atiku also recognized the commendable and transparent manner in which the elections were conducted, acknowledging the role of the South-east Governors’ Forum in facilitating a fair electoral process and smooth transition. He remarked, “The alliances forged among participants, despite their varied political backgrounds, offer valuable lessons.”
Emphasizing the importance of Mr. Azuta-Mbata’s election, Atiku described it as a pivotal moment for the organization, heralding a fresh era characterized by advancement, cohesion, and growth.
Recognizing the challenges posed by national divisions, Atiku urged the newly elected executives to not only unite the Igbo community but also to foster collaboration with other socio-cultural groups across Nigeria. He underlined the necessity of promoting tolerance and strengthening inter-communal relations to cultivate peace, which he deemed essential for stability and progress.
Atiku concluded with a call to action, asserting, “Fostering unity and peace is crucial in creating a united front to address the pressing socio-economic issues and enhance the quality of life for all Nigerians.”
