Socio-Economic group, The United States Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVIDUSA) has asserted that the only viable solution to Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic and security challenges is a return to the regional autonomy framework established between 1960 and 1963.

AVIDUSA issued a stark warning that the nation faces the risk of total disintegration if it does not embrace the regional autonomy model from that era.

In a statement signed by President Sylvester Onyia and Secretary Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the organization outlined its position.

AVIDUSA stated, “We firmly believe that reverting to the 1960/63 regional autonomy system is essential to address Nigeria’s socio-economic and security dilemmas.”

The statement referred to a significant meeting in 2017, shortly after the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from unlawful detention. At this meeting in Enugu, attended by the late Professor Ben Nwabueze, Evangelist Elliot U. Uko, and South-East governors, the demands of the Biafran populace were discussed.

On August 30, 2017, Kanu presented his requests to the South-East governors, chaired by Engr. Dave Umahi. His proposals included transforming Enugu into a first-rate international airport to facilitate easier access for the Igbo diaspora and upgrading Owerri airport, which was constructed with community contributions during Governor Sam Mbakwe’s tenure, into a functional cargo airport.

Kanu also called for the revitalization of all inactive industries in the South-East and South-South regions to create job opportunities for countless youths and graduates.

He warned that if these issues remained unaddressed, the Biafran community would seek a referendum to determine their status as marginalized citizens within Nigeria.

Kanu’s parents reportedly passed away due to the emotional toll of these challenges, and with him still detained without due process, there appears to be a growing consensus among both northern and southern leaders regarding the need for Nigeria’s restructuring.

The South-East Development Commission is a point of pride for the East, borne out of the advocacy efforts led by IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The organization calls for Kanu’s immediate release, insisting that he is a champion for justice.
