Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, recently held its 22nd undergraduate and 13th postgraduate convocation ceremony, celebrating the academic achievements of 2,842 graduands, including 160 PhD recipients.

The event, which took place on Sunday, was marked by the conferral of honorary doctorates on notable figures, including Wole Olanipekun, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, and Bukola Smith, Managing Director of FSDH Merchant Bank.

Vice-Chancellor Ademola Tayo addressed the audience, highlighting the university’s commitment to academic excellence and the significant achievements of its students. Among the graduates, 148 earned First Class degrees, with Elomezino Ifoghale and Glory Michael recognized as the top students in full-time and part-time programs, respectively, achieving impressive Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) of 4.89 and 4.56.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including the Governors of Ogun and Ekiti states, Dapo Abiodun and Biodun Oyebanji, who emphasized the importance of education in driving societal progress. Governor Abiodun reiterated the state’s commitment to making education affordable and accessible, despite the economic challenges facing Nigeria.

He acknowledged that quality education cannot be the sole responsibility of the government and called for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to enhance the educational landscape.

In his speech, Tayo noted that all academic programs at Babcock University are accredited by relevant bodies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC) and international accrediting organizations. He proudly mentioned that 22 of the university’s graduates excelled in the Nigeria Law School bar examination, showcasing the institution’s strong legal education program. Additionally, Babcock University students of Economics achieved third place in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) challenge during the 1st African Future Leader Competition in 2023.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted advancements in the university’s teaching hospital, which is now equipped with state-of-the-art medical technologies, including EEG machines and high-end ultrasound machines. This investment in infrastructure underscores the university’s commitment to providing quality education and training in health-related fields.

The proprietor of Lebarty American Leadership Academy, Okenfe Aigbe-Lebarty, who spoke at the event, emphasized the need for Nigerians to invest in quality education for all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. He expressed his desire to provide a school of American standards in a village setting, reinforcing the idea that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status.

This convocation ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of Babcock University graduates but also served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to improve the education system in Nigeria. As the nation faces numerous challenges, including economic instability and inadequate infrastructure, it is crucial for the government, private sector, and individuals to work together to ensure that every child has access to quality education.
