A 49-year-old man was detained by the police in Bauchi state on suspicion of trying to sell his 5-year-old daughter for N1.5 million.
Auwal Muhammad, the state’s commissioner of police, revealed this information at a press conference on Thursday in Bauchi.
Muhammad said that the suspect, posing as a member of the Warji Local Government Council personnel, was taken into custody on suspicion of trafficking in children.
The CP claims that the girl’s father went to pick her up from her divorced mother under the guise of taking her to visit his sister in Bauchi.
Muhammad said that while the father had committed the crime on May 26, he was unaware that the child’s purported buyer was a police detective.
The CP stated, “The defendant bargained for N1.5 million to give up his biological daughter. After that, he was arrested in a hotel in Bauchi.”
He claims that the father also gave N40,000 to the individual who connected him to the purported buyer.
He noted that when the investigation into the proven offense was finished, the suspect will face charges in court.
