A court in Brass, Bayelsa State has sentenced two men to five years in prison for conspiracy, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms. The men, Believe Leisure (36) and Jacob Doukumo (42), were caught by Operation Puff Adder officers of the Bayelsa State Police Command on December 24, 2022, near Sangana creek in Brass Local Government Area.
The Police Counsel, Stella A. Jerry-Friday, explained that the men were charged with conspiring to commit a felony and armed robbery, crimes punishable under section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, CAP R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
According to the police, Believe Leisure, Jacob Doukumo, and three other accomplices, who are still at large, carried out the robbery on December 24, 2022, at around 6:00 am in Sangana Akassa, Brass LGA. They were armed with a single-barrel gun and two machetes when they attacked two men, Johnbull New Year and a man named Jackson, stealing a 30-horsepower Suzuki outboard engine worth N600,000.
The investigation led by Supol Chris Nwaogbo of Operation Puff Adder resulted in the arrest and subsequent custody of Leisure and Doukumo. While awaiting trial, Believe Leisure died in the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Okaka, Yenagoa. Jacob Doukumo, however, appeared in court for sentencing.
Judge T.Y. Abasi found both men guilty on all three charges and sentenced them to five years in prison.
