Adebisi Akande, the Chairman of the University of Ibadan’s Governing Council, has taken a commendable step by requesting that any allowances he may be entitled to be redirected to support students enrolled in science courses at the university. In a letter addressed to the university’s Registrar, Ganiyu Oke, dated August 21, 2024, Akande made clear his intention to forego personal remuneration for his role and instead channel those funds into scholarships for deserving students.

In his letter, Akande that he views his role as Pro-Chancarticulated ellor of the University of Ibadan as a prestigious national responsibility, which he does not wish to profit from. He proposed that should he receive allowances for attending meetings or fulfilling his responsibilities, these funds should exclusively benefit undergraduate students studying Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Akande stated, “If the position is entitled to any allowances… you would be kind enough to apply any payments due to me from such allowances solely for the benefit of deserving undergraduate students of this University who are studying science courses.”

In addition to this, Akande has committed to ensuring the continuity of these scholarships. He emphasized that if, for any reason, his allowances were discontinued, his Adebisi Akande Foundation would provide the necessary funding to cover scholarship commitments. This move aims to ensure that students benefiting from this initiative would not face financial hardships.

His vision involves establishing an endowment fund that would not only cater to tuition but also assist with accommodation and other officially recognized fees for the qualifying science students. Akande highlighted the importance of sustaining this scholarship fund so that students can focus on their education without the burden of financial worries.

The decision by Akande comes shortly after his appointment as Pro-Chancellor by President Bola Tinubu on June 15, 2024. This philanthropic gesture underlines his dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for science students and acknowledges the financial challenges many students face.

In recent months, the University of Ibadan has seen significant student activism around tuition fees, with protests reported over proposed hikes. Akande’s initiative appears to be a thoughtful response to these concerns, as it not only addresses financial barriers but also supports the academic growth of students in critical fields of study.

As the academic year progresses, this initiative has the potential to create a lasting impact on the lives of many students. Akande’s proactive stance is a reminder of the crucial role educational leadership plays in fostering student success and community development.

Adebisi Akande’s initiative to transform his allowances into scholarships for science students at the University of Ibadan is an inspiring example of commitment to education and social responsibility. This move aims to alleviate the financial pressures faced by students, allowing them to fully engage in their studies and contribute to the advancement of their respective fields.
